Asus X401A Recovery never finishing / looping / repeatedly rebooting

Actually doing the recovery of the Asus X401A takes a number of hours.

The five DVDs get loaded and that takes ages. Then it says it will take 20 minutes copying files, and spends about 45 minutes doing so.

Then it boots into Windows "for the first time" and you think it will be ready soon. It will not.

It displays one or both of:

Factory installation in progress ...
Please wait and not operate.

and

Configuring the system.  Please
wait...

for 5 or 10 minutes, then reboots. Then it repeats the process. Not once, not twice, but at least 7 times. And each one takes 5 or 10 minutes.

The whole recovery process takes a few hours.
