I have, on and off, been trying to set up security web cams and out-of-the-window web cams for over a decade. Sometimes I get round to it, sometimes I don't.
Windows software
These were installed on my XP laptop:

- Creative Live! Cam Center (sic)

- My DSC
- Came with a very cheap but not bad webcam off the market in Anglesey

- PCCam
- iSpy
- Downloaded. Manages multiple cameras and does all sorts of clever stuff
- iSpy
- iSpyMonitor
