AWStats log file analyser for web site hit statistics

If possible, I need to change the page name from Awstats to AWStats. However, it seems to be a feature of wiki software that changing the case of page names beyond the standard title case is either impossible or very hard.

AWStats: "AWStats is powerful log analyzer which creates advanced web, ftp, mail and streaming server statistics reports based on the rich data contained in server logs. Data is graphically presented in easy to read web pages. Designed with flexibility in mind, AWStats can be run through a web browser CGI (common gateway interface) or directly from the operating system command line."

Where I have AWStats installed

I have AWStats installed on:, and

Accessing it - the URL

Sometimes it can be accessed by appending /awstats to the command line. Sometimes that does not work. Why?

Sometimes it is necessary to put /awstats/index.cgi on the command line.

index.cgi or ?

I am unsure whether one is supposed to access it through index.cgi, e.g. or, e.g. Using index.cgi makes this screen appear first:

Generating stats for the first time. Please wait, this can take a while.

Complete. You will be redirected to the stats page in a moment.

I can only assume the index.cgi script does an updating of the statistics by re-reading the log files.

Daily updating

I believe that to ensure the statistics are updated, one should have a crontab entry like this running each day:

/home/sites/ -config=mysite -update

Why it is rather than index.cgi I do not know.

Manual updating

Go to the current statistics page and click on the 'Update now' link on the top of the page.

Or execute the URL:

Or execute the URL: which seems to go to the same place but with the added Generating stats for the first time message.
