Alternatives to Unity

Courtesy of this site, I can see I don't have to have Unity.

I am going for XFCE, which means downloading and installing Xubuntu, as opposed to Ubuntu.

Having installed Xubuntu, on logging in one is presented with a choice of xfce session or xubuntu session. Xubuntu is xfce with knobs on and is preferable.
