Frontier Elite II page

I had never been able to scoop cargo despite many hour of trying.

Answer: fly a Viper.  I have also made it work with a Cobra Mk 1.  I
cannot make it work with an Eagle Long Range Fighter.

Not only can I scoop cargo, when I try to jettison stuff, I scoop it up
again automatically!

That was a Viper. I don't have any Frontier saves, so I just picked the Lave
start, bought a Viper, 1MW beam, scoop & conversion, hyperspaced to Leesti and
killed a couple of ships.

I would be surprised if the "scoop angle" was different between ships. Large ships
may collide before scoop range, but no small ship should have any trouble.

Save game: http://jaj22.org.uk/JAMESON._02

This is only a few seconds before scoop range, on a collision path. Leave the
controls alone and the canister will hit you. Tilt the nose up a bit and you'll
scoop it instead.

I assume you don't have any trouble picking up cargo in FFE then?

What I do is select the canister, engage autopilot and let it take me to ~0.8 km
from the cargo (sometimes use stardreamer x2 for this).  Then I switch to manual
control and increase set speed a little, adjusting direction so the cargo drifts
just below my field of view.  Works for me.

Just installed DOSbox under Win2000 Pro so I can try this for you.  I set my
preferences, then started at Lave and kitted out a Viper for scooping.  One jump
later I was attacked, I killed the pirate (Krait), then scooped what I guess was
his debris (metal alloys).  Here's the game, saved as quickly as I could tap Esc:

Apart from doing it _right now_, I used to do it quite often when I played
Frontier regularly.  I didn't find it difficult, but there is a bit of a knack to
it (see above).  Scooping cargo for finacial gain usually isn't worth the time it
takes, but it's fun to scoop some pirate's ill-gotten gains and sell them on. :)

Thank you to you and to John Jordan.

I was up until gone 1 a.m. this morning playing.

I loaded both games.  Yep.  I *can* now scoop cargo.  So it can be done in
Frontier:Elite II

Both of you were using Vipers.

I managed to reproduce the ability for myself in a Viper.  I couldn't believe how
easy it was!  Razzle-bleeding-frazzle!  At one point I hyperspaced into a system
and tried dumping radioactives and rubbish - and merely kept scooping it up
again!!!

I started the game again and reproduced it in a Cobra Mk 1 too.

So, it is not just big ships that can't scoop.  The Eagle Long Range Fighter can't
either.  So some can and some can't.  It's not because I'm an incompetent spangle.

So I'm starting to put together a web page showing how to do just this one
activity - give me a few days.

Once again: thank you Andrew Preater and thank you John Jordan.  You have made
this game fun for me again.

I'm off for a spot of piracy - and another bleary-eyed day in work!

Now then - what was the original question?
